How to choose your bridal robe: a designer’s guide

Dear bride,

Do the moments before you say “I do” matter to you? If you are reading this, I suspect they do.

On your wedding day you should feel like the bride from the very first minute: when the hair and make-up artist arrives, when you share a coffee with the people you love most, when the first nerves appear. And those quiet, intimate moments will also be captured by your photographer.

That is why choosing the right bridal robe matters more than it seems. As a bridal designer, I would love to help you choose yours, so that you feel beautiful, comfortable and completely yourself while you get ready.

These are the four things I always ask a bride to think about.

1. The season of your wedding

The time of year is the first thing to consider, because the fabric should change with the season: light, breathable fabrics with a little transparency for the warmer months, and fuller, cosier fabrics for the colder ones.

Spring

Spring brides tend to love light fabrics, soft colours and floral details. Three of my favourites:

• Alma, inspired by flowers coming back to life in spring.
• Paula, Alma’s sister, in a long cut.
• Mencía, if you fancy a touch of colour: its Toile de Jouy print is pure spring.

Summer

In the hottest months, choose fabrics that let your skin breathe and light colours that glow in the sunshine:

• Plumeti, a timeless robe in dotted chiffon, light and airy.
• Helena, in a semi-sheer fabric with Chantilly lace.
• Lola, our best-seller: short, in satin and wonderfully fresh on the skin.

Autumn and winter

For an autumn (or fall) or winter wedding, I recommend fabrics with more body and warmth:

• Velvet, soft and silky to the touch, designed for winter brides.
• Manila, in silk and cotton, with exquisite embroidery of exotic birds, like a traditional Manila shawl.

2. A morning or an evening wedding

The time of day also helps you decide.

A daytime wedding

For a morning or midday wedding, look for a robe that reflects the freshness and light of the moment: light, flowing fabrics such as silk or delicate lace, short or mid-length cuts that let you move freely, and subtle embroidery or floral details.

An evening wedding

If you are marrying in the evening, you can choose a more sophisticated robe: satin with a soft sheen, lace or tulle details, and cuts with a beautiful drape that make you feel truly special.

3. Your personality

Your wedding day should reflect who you are, and your robe is a first chance to show it.

• Classic and elegant? A timeless robe in dotted chiffon, like Plumeti.

Simple or intricate

4. Your height and figure

Have you ever wondered which robe would suit you best? A few pointers:

Tall brides

You can wear long robes with plenty of drape. Look for vertical lines or details at the top to balance your figure, and avoid robes that are very fitted, or very full at the bottom. All our robes are designed to be worn loose and, because each one is made by hand, we can often make them longer: just ask us before you order.

Medium height

You have lots of options. Mid-length robes show a little leg and lengthen your figure, and styles that mark the waist create a flattering silhouette. That is why every one of our robes comes with a sash, so you can tie it exactly where it suits you.

Petite brides

Shorter robes, above the knee or at mid-calf, will not overwhelm you and create the illusion of longer legs; a V-neck and a defined waist lengthen your figure too. And if you fall in love with a longer design, we can adjust the length for you.

Made by hand, one by one

Every robe and nightgown in our collection is designed and made by hand in our atelier in Seville, one by one, the traditional way. We don’t hold stock: each piece is made to order, which is why it usually takes around 7 to 15 days to leave the atelier.
